I don't know which reservations you have against cloud in general and particular cloud offers in special. TravelMore wrote:Honestly, I have been against putting anything in the cloud and currently in the transition of pulling things off of google drive and putting them towards the qnap nas instead of using Googles cloud. I want to mention just one additional article about variations to the wide-spread idea of 3-2-1 rule Opens a new window, reporting about differences and impacts of such variations, published by Backblaze, a provider of a component for backup concepts to include cloud. This does not apply to concepts requiring hardware RAID as Synology and QNAP offer mainly software RAID which seem to be sufficient for you and your non-profit. There also exist various generic presentations often selecting Synology as an appliance example although similar approaches exist with various vendors and hence may be applied to QNAP also. Two have already been mentioned by other Spiceheads. There continue to be several tutorials on backup on QNAP website Opens a new window. I did not see the father-son concept mentioned there if you want to have complementary options. It presents a set of options and their impacts. If you want assistance on that, Wikipedia provides a relevant overview Opens a new window although it does not seem to provide a broad enough overview. Now, I see more two kind of marketing articles which are a bit abstract and not mentioning important concepts to choose and impacts of decisions made on achievable protection level ( here Opens a new window and here Opens a new window). In the past, there was also a good introductory article on QNAPs web site on backup. I did not understand if you're requesting assistance on establishing a backup concept or on updating a backup concept with which constraints. What is the best way to prep against failed NAS drives, data corruption, failed QNAP NAS unit, or backing up my backups?Īny suggestions or game plans on how you guys do stuff or recommend is appreciated. I think I did one backup a year ago and haven't had a chance to backup new data to it. I don't do incremental backups w/the 10TB. One spot the local PC/a flash drive, 2nd spot NAS, 3 external 10tb. I do have copies still on my computers or flash drives of different things so theoretically I have about 3 backups of something. I often thought about doing an offsite backup somewhere but not even sure where I would put that. One NAS has all my stuff on it and the other NAS is for a nonprofit that I help out with.

I have a 10TB encrypted external drive that is the 'backup for my 2 NASs. Drive 1 and d2 are mirroring each other and drives 3 and 4 are unmounted. Drive 3 is a global spare and drive 4 has separate data on it. One is a 420 the other is a 421.Ĭurrently, the 420 has 4 drives in it.
